TEACHING [Past posts below]
From the prophet we read-
Amos 7:10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
Amos 7:11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
Amos 7:12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
Amos 7:13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
Amos 7:14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
Amos 7:15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
Amos 7:16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
Amos 7:17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Amos was challenging the authority of Jeroboam [the 2nd]- and the priest confronts the prophet- and says-
O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
Amos 7:13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
There were actually ‘professional’ paid prophets at this time- and in essence the priest was saying ‘go make your living back home- we are familiar with the way you guys operate- go earn your pay somewhere else’.
That’s why we get the seemingly strange response from Amos-
Amos 7:14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
Amos 7:15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
He was saying something like this ‘I’m not one of the paid clergy- no- God really called me to speak the word of the Lord- you know- like in the old days- when the prophets were not a professional class’.
Yes- Amos was prophesying at a time of economic health- though Israel was divided, yet at this period the northern tribes [also called Israel] were in harmony with the southern tribes [Judah].
Amos was coming to Bethel- the seat of authority for the northern tribes- and challenging the king at the seat of judgment.
Sort of like when Jesus flipped the tables of the money changers over in the temple court- also the seat of authority in his day.
The priest- as well as the king- did not appreciate the ‘clergy’ stepping out of what they saw as their place- sort of like in our day- most human governments are OK with christians and leaders- as long as they do their ‘church stuff’ on Sunday at ‘the church’.
But when the people of God regain their prophetic voice once again- then leadership wants to say ‘just go home- go do your thing at the church- why are you meddling in our affairs’.
The reality is that God rules over the affairs of men- all men.
And Amos was simply prophesying a word- yes- of judgment to come- because the people strayed away from God.
Sure enough- Amos prophecy will come true- when the Assyrians take Israel captive not too long after- and yes- The priest will also ‘receive’ the harsh word that Amos spoke.
Because it wasn’t simply a matter of ‘church as normal’- the people got used to the prophets- they often heard positive words- how to prosper and do well.
These were actually common themes among the false prophets of the Old Testament.
And yes- there are indeed times when these prophecies are true-
But when God calls the people to repentance- when he holds those in power accountable for their actions- then he raises up an Amos- or Jeremiah- or Isaiah- and they speak the words that are truly coming from God-
And when that happens- well- it’s important for all of us to hear- and repent.
